So near yet so far....again

It was a case of deja vu again on Saturday when the senior team visited Usk. As has been the story of the season despite playing good rugby we fell to another agonising narrow defeat. Fleur started very brightly and took the game to the hosts in the opening quarter. Then against the run of play where we were turned over in midfield Usk broke from halfway and scored a try which was converterd. We battled back into the game squandering a number of try scoring opportunities before Scott turner landed a penalty to bring the score to 7-3. Then just moments before half time we failed to clear our lines and Usk again capitalised to make the score 12-3 at halftime. The second half started in a similar vein to the first with Fleur forwards controlling the set pieces in particular in the scrum. But a combination of poor handling and some poor decision making saw the scores remain the same for the opening period of the second half before Scott turner add another penalty to make it 12-6. Then as the game went into its final stages concerted pressure on the Usk line resulted in a 5yard scrum which the pack drove over for dale vokes to claim a try which was converted to put us into a 13-12 lead. All we needed to do now was continue with the same pattern of play as the rest of the half but entering the last 5 minutes the hosts were awarded a dubious penalty around the halfway line which their fullback slotted over. With the score at 15-13 with 4 minutes to go there was still hope. But some panic rugby resulted in a turn over and Usk worked up the field to score a 3rd try to end the game and make the final score 20-13 leaving us with yet another losing bonus point.

Nobody can doubt the effort and work the players put in on a Saturday but it is frustrating for the coaching team to see how close we can come on a Saturday with such a poor commitment to training by certain members of the squad. If those members of squad put the same effort as the core of the squad our league position would improve very rapidly
