We welcomed Oakdale to Trelyn Park for the second time in just over a month in this WRU bowl game. Fleur started brightly and played the better rugby in the first quarter but only had a penalty to show for it. Then the team upped their game and were stretching the Oakdale defence forcing them into a number of cynical fouls which resulted in them receiving 2 yellow cards. This lead to the first Fleur try of the afternoon by Jordan Clash following some neat interplay by forwards and backs.
The second half started with Oakdale picking up the pace and the referee seemingly intent on evening things up by giving ieaun Hale and Adrian John yellow cards in quick succession. This combined with some very sloppy tackling allowed Oakdale to score 2 tries in 2 minutes to race into a 17-10 lead. Fleur were not beaten yet and battled back hard using their dominant scrum to put Oakdale in all kinds of trouble. This lead to a scrum 5 and yet again the Oakdale front row stood up and as they retreated at a rate of knots Sean Morris picked up and burrowed over for a try and Ieaun Hale converted to bring the game level.
Then as the game entered the final 5 minutes not for the first time in the game the referee made the absolutely baffling decision to award a penalty to Oakdale after one of their players was isolated on the floor and our defender was jackling perfectly legally. Oakdale kicked the penalty to go into a 20-17 lead. Fleur came back again with one almighty effort and were awarded a penalty which they decided to run in a attempt to win the game rather than play for the draw. Unfortunately Oakdale managed to hold out to take the victory.
We wish Oakdale all the best in the next round. As for our young squad they will learn from this experience and stick together and can feel aggrieved my a number of the decisions that went against them in the game. As stated the feeling in the squad is strong and they win together or lose together. But if any of our supposed 'fans' think they could do better rather than just sitting criticising the team or players performances on social media get a pair of boots on and get down the field and show us how good you are. Training is Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm
